- If your toilet is not flushing properly or is continually filling itself, the problem may be your ball valve.
- Lift off the cistern lid. Check the level of the ball. It should be just a little lower than the level of the overflow pipe. If not rising high enough it will cause the toilet to constantly be filling up with water. This in turn causes the cistern to constantly refill, which is a nuisance and a waste of water. Bend the arm of the valve until high enough to stop the flow of water into the pan (on an old system) or check the plastic arm that attaches to the flush handle for a small screw. This is the grub screw and may need to be tightened with a suitable screwdriver; this should fix the ball in place and stop the flow of water.
- If the cistern is not filling properly or the water level is dropping the problem may be a faulty float or a problem with the refill valve. To check if there is a problem turn off the water supply and mark the water level inside the cistern with a pencil mark and return a few minutes later to check if the level has dropped.
- Check the ball float by unscrewing it. If the ball is water logged it will need to be replaced as it will not rise high enough in the cistern.
- Check the metal link between the plastic arm and the pump mechanism, directly beneath it. If this is damaged or bent in any way, it may break and damage the entire system. To replace it, lift the plastic pump shaft the link is attached to out of the pump and remove the linkage. Be careful to hold onto the pump as it may be sucked down into the system and lost. Fix a replacement link and reinsert the pump shaft.
