Most reputable tradesmen will provide some form of guarantee appropriate to the work that is carried out. However, this will vary from firm to firm and job to job and it is always advisable to put all agreements down in writing. Remember, your contract is between you and the tradesmen you engage (and as such we accept no liability) but some tips we find useful are:
- Agree on all costs, schedule of works and responsibilties in advance.
- Wherever possible (in most cases) agree a fixed price.
- Compare quotes, but remember that price is only one consideration.
- Don't be tempted to offer cash to 'save VAT'. This is illegal and leaves you unprotected.
- Agree staged payments as work is completed.
- Reaffirm trade affiliations and review references.
- Treat tradesmen fairly and they will do the same.
