For those fortunate enough to live in a climate suitable to growing melons, leaving the fruit on the ground while it grows induces rot and leaves it susceptible to bugs. For smaller types of melons you can place disposable plates to protect them from sitting directly on the soil. Watermelons and larger melons may require multiple plates, or wooden slats.
