Theres no need to reach for all those chemical weedkillers as a first port of call. A cheap and easy method is to use the black plastic bin liners. You can get rid of weeds in a flower bed you want to dig over by simply covering them with several black bags and the weeds will die off.

Later on these bags are great as a strawberry protector too...just surround each plant with an opened out bag and this protects them from the damp ground.
